Volunteer opportunities

Volunteers provide administrative assistance in various office capacities strengthening their data review and entry, copying, scanning, and phone work skills.

Early Ambulation Program Volunteers assist, accompany and encourage identified inpatients to ambulate and move from one place to another. Training will be provided to volunteers by designated Physical Medicine & Rehab staff. Due to the training involved, we kindly ask volunteers to commit to 6 months of service. Hours for the DPT Program application can be earned.

Our volunteers in Ambulatory Surgery provide support to patients here for same day procedures and general assistance to staff.

Volunteers offer books, magazines, and newspaper & general conversation to patients at their bedside.

The White Plains Hospital Caregiver Support Program is designed to provide support and resources to those caring for loved ones facing the challenge of acute or chronic illness. Caregiver Partners (volunteers) will be specially trained to provide emotional support and counseling, identify family needs, help families navigate the hospital system and provide community resources. Our volunteers say that they "get back more than they give."

If you have been a family caregiver and understand the challenges that families can face, please consider applying for Caregiver Support. You only have to bring your compassion and kindness and we will provide the rest. We provide ongoing training and support to our volunteers throughout their time as a Caregiver Partner.

Our Volunteer & Dog Teams visit inpatients at the Main Hospital and staff throughout the healthcare system to help reduce anxiety and feelings of isolation and help improve overall mood. Volunteer and Dog teams must be certified or be willing to get certified through a qualified pet therapy organization. Reimbursement is available to assist with initial certification costs for eligible volunteers.

Volunteers help to create a positive atmosphere at our Center for Cancer Care assisting with various department needs.

Creative heARTS is a program at White Plains Hospital that utilizes the artistic talents of volunteers and community members in order to engage with hospital patients and staff in a meaningful way. Volunteers are asked to create and donate handmade items—such as origami, jewelry, small pictures and paintings (size 4x6in or smaller), poetry, knitted or crocheted items, and greeting cards—for distribution to patients at WPH and the Center for Cancer Care, staff throughout the healthcare system, and to the hospital's gift shop locations.

To get involved, please email volunteers@wphospital.org the idea of what you'd like to create and donate. Please specify if you would like your items to be distributed to patients, staff, the gift shops, or wherever it's needed most.

When your items are made and ready to be donated, they can be dropped off any time to the front desk reception area of White Plains Hospital at 20 Davis Avenue labelled with your name, email, and destination, along with amount of time spent in creating your art or crafts so you can receive credit for your service hours.

We happily invite school classrooms and community organizations to engage in creating the items together as a group project. Thank you and happy crafting!

Our volunteers in the Emergency Department serve as a liaison between patients, families and staff and ensure that they have everything they need for comfort.

Volunteers provide general assistance to staff at our Family Health Center that provides integrated primary, specialty, and preventative care to community members. Bilingual skills are highly appreciated in this location.

Our Gift Shop Volunteers assist in our campus’s two Boutiques and help customers enjoy a bit of retail therapy.

Healing Touch is a relaxing, nurturing energy therapy that uses gentle, heart-centered touch to assist in balancing physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Our trained Healing Touch Volunteers provide Healing Touch modality to patients and caregivers as requested. The Hospital will sponsor Healing Touch certification training to selected and cleared volunteers.

Our Healthful Harmonies Volunteers are singers/musicians who provide music at the patient’s bedside to create a pleasant, healing atmosphere. At the moment, we are looking for singers and/or musicians who play stringed instruments.

Volunteers at our information desk and reception areas extend a warm, friendly welcome, greet patients and visitors, and provide direction as needed.

Life Story Facilitators are specifically trained to interview patients who have agreed to be part of our Life Story Narrative Program and record the patient’s life story. The facilitator must be able to listen, converse and possess excellent writing skills, as reflected in a writing sample. We ask for a commitment of at least one year for this program.

Patient Experience Volunteers provide a welcoming environment to inpatients and family members, engage in friendly, non-clinical conversation, and provide a listening ear when needed. Volunteers inform patients/family of Hospital information, help connect to resources as appropriate, and act as a liaison with staff.

Volunteers work alongside our Patient Transport team to help escort transport patients and visitors throughout the hospital and transport materials as needed.
