Dress in winter layers
If you must go outside when temperatures plummet, protect yourself with proper clothing. For starters, wearing several layers of loose-fitting clothing can help you stay safe and warm. These facts can help you choose well.
LAYERING BOOSTS INSULATION
1. Inner layer. An inner layer of wool, silk or synthetic fabrics (like polypropylene) holds more body heat than cotton and helps keep moisture away from your skin.
2. Insulation layer. Natural fibers, like wool, goose down or fleece, trap warm air.
3. Outer layer. This layer helps protect against wind, rain or snow.
In addition to layering your clothing to protect against extreme cold, remember to wear a:
- Hat.
- Scarf.
- Mittens or gloves.
- Water-resistant boots.
