Thoracic surgery

Benign and malignant diseases of the chest call for innovative, highly skilled care. At White Plains Hospital, we are proud to take a patient-centered approach to treating diseases that affect the organs in the thoracic cavity, such as the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum and trachea.

In addition to traditional surgeries, our thoracic experts perform cutting-edge, minimally invasive surgeries using advanced imaging, robots and specially designed instruments that are safer, less painful and allow for a quicker recovery.

Experienced chest surgeons and team

Our thoracic surgery team includes board-certified thoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, anesthesiologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, radiation and medical oncologists, and critical care intensivists with expertise in evaluating pulmonary nodules. This multidisciplinary team provides each patient with an individualized plan that minimizes the time from diagnosis to treatment. Patients work with a physician assistant throughout the process. This specialist guides patients through every step of their treatment journey.

Our experienced thoracic surgeons—not trainees—complete all procedures. For especially complicated surgeries, two surgeons collaborate, bringing decades of experience into the OR.

Our nurses have extensive education. In addition, our partnerships with physical therapy and respiratory therapy help our patients thrive after surgery.

Comprehensive lung cancer care

White Plains Hospital has also been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR), recognizing our commitment to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the greatest risk for lung cancer.

The Lung Cancer Screening Program, an IRB-approved clinical trial, has connected hundreds of individuals at high risk for developing lung cancer with resources for early detection of disease and more favorable prognoses.
